Dance is
an integral part of Souhair’s soul. As
a teenager she participated in folk dances; later she studied modern dance and
Chinese classical dance. After immigrating
to North America, she studied belly dancing in Toronto and various U.S.
cities. To explore and perfect her art,
Souhair also studied Hawaiian dance and Spanish dance in the 1990’s.
Souhair’s
work and teaching has concentrated on Mid-Eastern belly dance. Souhair has appeared as a feature belly
dancer at several Toronto restaurants.
From the late 80s to the present, she has taught belly dance classes for
the Toronto Board of Education, and in recent years for the Durham Board of
Education.
In 1989, Souhair founded the Souhair Dance Troupe. The Troupe performs dances choreographed by Souhair and other
well-known choreographers. Souhair
bases her dances on classic Egyptian belly dance and integrates movements and
highlights from ballet, jazz, Chinese, Spanish and Hawaiian dance, creating a
fusion of styles that embodies Toronto’s rich cultural mix.
Souhair’s goal is to introduce
students and audiences to Mid-Eastern dance and to provide a communication
bridge between North American and Arabic cultures. It is Souhair's wish that the Troupe will continue to entertain
and delight audiences with the mystery and charm of Middle Eastern dance for
many years to come.
